Linebacker Daryl Smith will serve as a celebrity chef for the second consecutive year at the Salvation Army's Women's Auxiliary 24th Annual Celebrity Chefs Tasting & Silent Auction event this Thursday. The tasting and auction begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. Smith will serve a roasted beet and goat cheese salad. "I'm looking forward to participating in the event again," Smith said. "I had a great time last year." Tickets for the event are $25.00 and include parking, tasting and a free cookbook containing featured recipes. All proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida's local social services programs including the five-star rated Child Development Center. As I described in "Local Economics" on this blog, in today's NFL a small market team must maximize its local revenue to be competitive on the football field. All sources of local revenue must be maximized, but as an organization you must first prioritize what will provide the most benefit over as many revenue streams as possible. For the Jaguars in 2010, the priority is filling the general bowl. It is no coincidence that Touchdown Jacksonville and Team Teal are focusing on the same area. Filling the general bowl not only generates ticket revenue, but more importantly gets our games on television. Whether or not our home games are on local television does not impact our national TV revenue in the short-term. In the long-term, sustained blackouts could affect the national contracts when they are up for renewal. Home games being on TV is important in cultivating our fans of the future. While the vision of a Bye Week for most players, staff and fans is one of rest and relaxation, there is a dark side of football that few ever see. Deep under the teal seats of the stadium is the Athletic Training Room where the injured players spend a good part of the Bye weekend.  The healthy players are off visiting friend and family while the players with injuries have work to do.  It's not a fun weekend for the players that have mandatory rehab or for the athletic trainers who are still working to help these players.  With that being said, this is a very important weekend for the Jags because this is a weekend where we can get the necessary work to make our team better. Jaguars offensive tackle Tony Pashos and several of his teammates used their "off day" on Monday to spread some holiday cheer to several children in the area. Pashos joined 10 of his teammates for a special visit to Wolfson Children's Hospital to hand out gifts for the more than 75 children that won't be spending the holidays at home. Following the hospital visit, Pashos hosted 12 children from Guardian Ad Litem in Jacksonville at Applebee's in St. John's Town Center for dinner, and then he took the group on a shopping spree at Dick's Sporting Goods. The event was one of the monthly outings Pashos hosts with the Pashos Pals group he started in 2007.
