A good rule of thumb for the draft is that if you want to gain a pick this year, it'll take next years pick in the next highest round. In other words, if you want a Second, it's gonna cost you next year's First.

With that in mind, is there anyone available in this draft that would compel you to trade away next year's First in order to take him? This does not mean to trade up from Jacksonville's original Second Round spot, but to gain a draft pick outright.

Some names that I think may be worth it are below:

Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia

Cordy Glenn

Vinny Curry

Lavonte David

Janoris Jenkins

Those are the 4 I think are still first round talents.
I can see him as a Darren Sproles type back, but nothing more. JagFanatic24 on Richardson

Upshaw is going to play with hatred, and passion now after being passed up.

All the names you two mentioned, plus Massie, Fleener, Hill, Randle, Silatolu, Worthy and Still have all been mocked in the 1st round all over the place.

Randle, Fleener, Hill, Silatolu, Upshaw and Worthy in my opinion are first round talent.

Janoris Jenkins is top 10 talent but, well, that ain't happening.

If I caught wind that someone was looking at Upshaw ahead of me, I would be willing to give up next year's First in order to take him as long as I got to keep my current Second Round selection.

Go to NFL.com... then look at anyone rated around 85 or better.

Those are the guys considered "instant" starter material.

Glenn 88
Upshaw 88
Martin 87
Branch 86.5
David 86.5
Fleener 86.5
Adams 86
Hill 86
Jenkins 86
Konz 86
Randle 86
Dennard 85.7
Brown 85
Massie 85

Curry 84.5
Miller 84.5
Thompson 84.5
Worthy 84.5

There are also a TON of OTs and CBs just a tad lower.

Rounds 2 and 3 have tremendous value.

How is Dennard an 85? One of my least favorite prospects.

The strength at this point look like on the offensive line.

I am thinking if a tackle is there and Buffalo wants to move up, I'd slide a bit down and get some more mid-late round picks.

Hill 86
Jenkins 86 - think he is off Gene's board
Konz 86 - big medical red flags..no thnx
Randle 86
Dennard 85.7 - head case no thnx
Brown 85

I would be fine with any of the above except those w/ comments....would prefer DE/WR/OL in that order tho

Another thing that keeps our options open is that Britton is so versatile.

He can play RT, G, and even C.

There are so many Ts out there. May still be able to find a quality one in the third.

So do we groom the next RT, while we use this season to make sure Britton is healthy before retiring Meester?

Didn't even think about that. I could see them wanting Bobby Massie.

I bet there will be a run on the OT early in the 2nd....once Massie/Glenn get picked you will see the run...could trade with Buffalo if that happens

Why 85?

I definitely would not want to trade our 2013 first round pick. Usually teams with new head coaches have bad seasons and the few who do win a lot of games are loaded with talented veterans. Marvin Lewis won eight 8 games during 2003, which was pretty good for a rookie head coach with a new quarterback. So I will be surprised if we make the playoffs this year and want to keep our 2013 first round pick.

If he is still available at 38. Because we stole Justin Blackmon from the Rams, they might want Jeffery.

Is Jeffery considered a project or Week 1 starter? The way board members talk about him, I am guessing he can be one of our opening day starters. That would make me happy. But we still need a tight end, a backup running back, and two offensive linemen.

We just spent the our last two First Round picks on a QB and a WR. Now we need to protect that investment! Get an OL! Glenn, Martin, Konz, Silotolu, Massie, Adams. Those are six choices. Since we have the sixth pick in the 2nd, one of them will be available. I also like the idea of trading down 5-10 spots and getting our 4th Round pick back. One of those guys might still be available.

There seems to be some good OL talent in rounds 2 & 3. So the FO may be willing to take a chance and get a pass rushing specialist like Courtney Upshaw or Vinny Curry and then get their OL in the 3rd. But, if Glenn, Martin or Konz are there, I would take one of them before DE. They each had 1st round grades and we need to OL help more than we need DE.

Not even close to the BAP. At least 10 prospects ahead of him.

As badly as I would love another 2nd round pick, I don't really like the idea of trading 1st round picks.....
Draft, Floyd DT, A. Okafor DE, M. Ball RB, S. Porter LB, AJ Klein LB, R. Smith WR, C. Taylor SS

I"m not okay with trading next year's first for a second this year. That could easily be a top 10 pick and no one left is worth that.

O-Line may be more of the Rams priority at that spot.

NFL.com included a guide to what their grading system means.

96-100 Future Hall of Famer, top pick(s) of entire draft
85-95 Immediate Starter, 1st round grade
70-84 Eventual Starter, 2nd-3rd round
50-69 Draftable Player, 4th-7th
20-49 Free Agent, UDFA
"A great corner takes away one side of the field; a great pass rusher takes away the whole thing."

There is enough value at pick 38. We'll get a very good player and move on. No need to sacrifice the future. First round picks are too valuable.
